09 Feb 2014

Saturday afternoon 8th February was our first Swim League meet of the season and in our new division at Preston.

(Age groups in this competition are 12 and under, 14 and under and Opens.)

The adrenaline was running very high and there were lots of anxious faces around the poolside as well from other teams.

The team started off well , with the new medley race we finished in 2nd position. This new race, involves having to swim a boy and a girl from the 12 under age group, one boy or girl from the 14 under group and one boy or girl from the open age group: but the team can only have 2 boys and 2 girls. What was great fun was that the race can be done in any order! We had parents telling us that there was a girl racing against our boy and a man swimming against our 12 year old girl!!!

In the other races, points were hard to come by and lots of races were extremely close. The team achieved in their individual swims Seven 1st places, Five 2nd places, Three 3rd places and Nine 4th. Well done, and I’m sure with extra pressure! And training, we can make more of those 4th places into 3rds and gain those vital extra points.

We were fortunate today with Eleanor Cantwell making the journey from Lancaster and Ben Gilbertson stepping up to help the boys Open races. Fabulous team work poolside and overwhelming support for each other.

Individual races had 7 individual wins and deserve a well done !!!

Girls: Eleanor Cantwell (19) winning her 50 meter Breaststroke, Anna Hulme (14) winning her 50 meter Freestyle, Katelyn Quirk (12) winning her 50 meter Breaststroke and 50 Fly and Eleanor Rea (11) winning her 50 meter Freestyle.

Boys Kieran Hennessy (14) winning his 50 meter Breaststroke, and Liam Walker (14) winning his 50 meter Freestyle.

There were also 6 personal best times achieved in the individual races!

Ethan Scrutton (13) 50 Breaststroke, Anna Hulme (14) 50 Back, Luke Chorley(14) 50 Back, Jake Wissett (11) 50 Breaststroke, Sean Quirk(15) 50 Fly and Chelsi Hanlon (13) 50 Back.

Our can do, fantastic approach to relays took control and we steadily took lots of points from the other teams. Swimmers also offering to cover for other swimmers who were ill, and Jake Wissett stepped up and had to cover in the boys 14 under years race, with Jake only being 11 this was a great swim.

The new rules have swimmers at the age at the 31/7/14 so some swimmers will be able to compete in the same age group as last year, especially if they have a late summer birthday. The other new rule change is that the cannon is single points rather than double and again can be done in any order. Today we chose to swim all our girls first and then the boys! Wonder what we will do next time?

Final Result =Clitheroe 1st place, Preston 2nd place, Ormskirk 3rd place and Lancaster 4th.
